  Annotation #1

I found an article online “Adderall & Me: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” of a man named Pablo Manriquez who had experienced Adderall on a first hand basis. He started taking Adderall without being prescribed because as a Notre Dame student on the wrestling team, he had trouble finding time for his upper level classes. A friend offered Manriquez Adderall, and he broke his experience down into the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good: When students are stressed or unable to focus, they claim Adderall helps drastically. The author says the pill made him feel outstanding and competitive. The drug assisted him with not only finishing his essay but also cleaning his entire room spotless. After the author went to the doctor to get prescribed (addiction already settling in) the doctor was unsure because he said once you take Adderall there was no going back. The doctor claims “Adderall is forever.” The author still got prescribed and claimed the primary effects were outstanding. But then reality settled in.

The Bad: Side Effects. Manriquez said that for years he had little sleep. The positive effects of Adderall started to wear off. The drug started making the author feel angry and annoyed. He became paranoid and rude due to lack of sleep and agitation. The author decided he wanted to get off the pill.

The Ugly: When the author gets off Adderall, he says his routine consisted merely of work and sleep. Nothing more. All his energy disappeared. To bounce back, he tried to exercise and diet. Very slowly, he began to get his energy back and stay off the pill. Manriquez reveals that studies show that a large portion of hospital related incidents involve ADHD medication.

This article gives me a first hand story about a man who actually dealt with addiction to Adderall and the positive/negative effects. It makes me wonder how many people out there really use Adderall? Why do people use it? Is it just for education or is it a social drug as well? How easily can one be prescribed to Adderall if the author went into the doctors and got it no problem? I think this article gives the basic outline of what Adderall does over a period of time and I want to dig in and get more detailed answers to my questions.
